One of the main questions that still surrounds the whole electric car issue is, is there a cheap electric car? The electric car is yet to achieve the revolutionary status as far as affairs with the global automobile industry is concerned. Be that as it may, electric cars are indeed very popular and the popularity of these environmentally friendly automotive solutions keeps on rising by the day. One major setback though when it comes to electric cars and precisely, the ability of electric cars to making significant inroads into the global automobile market is the cost of these cars. It is indeed true that electric cars are relatively much more expensive as compared to convectional automobiles. This can mainly be attributed to the technology that goes towards developing and manufacturing these cars.
The brief analysis on the global status of electric cars still raises the question; is there a cheap electric car? The
answer to this question is a resounding no. Going by the current average prices of electric cars globally, one can easily conclude that indeed, there are no cheap electric cars. Electric cars are indeed some of the priciest automobiles in the market today. A brief analysis of low end electric cars which can be considered base models as far as the global electric car industry reveal that the average prices of these low end models range from $18,000 to $25,000. The Mitsubishi i, which is considered one of the most affordable’ electric car models retails for about $22,000. For this amount of money, you get a very small two seater car that can only be used for city driving. Other popular electric car models such as the Toyota Prius, the Chevy Spark and the Ford Focus Electric are even pricier.
No matter which way one chooses to look at it, 18 or 25 grand for that matter cannot be considered as cheap. For these sums of money, one can purchase a mid-range convectional SUV or even Sedan. These convectional cars can be used for city, long range driving and even off-road driving. On the other hand, if one opts for an electric car, they will have to contend with the significant limitations of their cars in terms of the car’s versatility.
However, many people will of course advance the argument that the fuel cost savings will be more than enough to cater for any limitations associated with these pricy but very limited cars. This discussion notwithstanding, many people will still be left with the question, is there a cheap electric car?…
